HEGE IREN AASDAL
Join Hege for this VEDEMIS BASKET 3x day workshop.
With Hege, you will use split willow and hazel to create the Vedmeis basket, traditionally used for hay, wood and storing wool.
This has a special structure with two hoops/handles that also form the legs on the basket. It is built with extra stakes in the corners that create a beautiful, round shape.
You will learn to use different splitting techniques from traditional willow, using with a 3 or 4 way cleave, with the preparation of materials forming half of the course and the making, the second half.

We are excited to introduce Hege Iren Aasdal, joining us all the way from Steinsø, Norway. Hege is passionate about producing baskets directly from nature, passing on traditions and knowledge both about the processing of materials and about weaving techniques.
In Norway, people have always made baskets from the materials in their surroundings, rods from different tree species, including birch, wild willow, hazel, juniper, and bird cherry, all measuring about two to four centimetres by the root. The main strategy for making baskets in rural areas of Norway was to split the available material to make it pliable and soft enough to weave into baskets.
