An introduction into using wild hazel in frame basketry. Learn how to split and shave it into ribs, frames or even skeins with a simple knife. Please bring your own pocket knife and, so far you can and want, even own wood to split ( 2 to 3 cm base diameter, can be hazel but also dogwood, sweet chestnut, buckthorn…)​

Since completing his training at Parnham College in 1979, he's run his own business designing and making bespoke furniture to commission for individual clients. He now mainly teaches, running weekly furniture making classes from his workshop in Somerset. He's a regular visiting instructor at the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship in Maine, USA.

'The lost basket of Sheffield'

Split oak baskets were made in Sheffield for the charcoal making process circa 1890. The baskets were made from oak, hazel and willow from the managed woodlands surrounding Sheffield In South Yorkshire. Angela Sanders has been on a quest to uncover more about the basket.  The starting point of the research was a photograph, in a book about Sheffields Woodland Heritage by Mel Jones (4th Ed 2009) that featured and described a split oak basket,

In this talk you will hear about the steps taken to uncover the Sheffield Oak Basket and you are invited to contribute your thoughts, skills and knowledge to the findings. 

​The Marchmont Workshop, founded by award winning designers Richard Platt and Sam Cooper, is one of the last homes of the rush-seated chair. A heritage craft that until 2018, when Rich and Sam apprenticed with mentor Lawrence Neal, was in danger of dying out. Continuing the legacy of Ernest Gimson and Phillip Clissett, our furniture starts with the first principles of woodworking, selecting and harvesting our own materials, with every chair turned, steam-bent and finished by hand.

We believe good furniture should last a lifetime, and by using traditional skills and techniques passed down from master to apprentice through six generations, we can achieve just that. Our designs range from classics from the Arts and Crafts movement, to our latest more contemporary additions, all utilising the strength, beauty and versatility of native timbers.

My process-led practice is based on personal engagement with landscape and has sustainability at its heart. I am fascinated by the detail of organic things and my work celebrates and carries an essence of what I experience in the natural world. My background in physical geography and nature conservation underpins my artistic practice.

Coming from a British arts and crafts background, my first broad interest for artefacts lead to study art history and archaeology. After sevral years studying in Perpignan, Barcelona and Montpellier leaving with a BA in art history, an MA in contemporary arts curatorship and  an MA in field archaeology, I worked as a commercial archaeologist in the south of France for sevral years following through various international projects from my university days (research excavations in the south of France but also in Syria and Armenia). In between digs and projects I went on upholstery, woodwork and sewing courses… and a basketry course. After a few years of living from one project to the next without knowing quite what or when the next would turn up, every aspect of basketry drew me in.

The incredibly gifted multi skilled weaver Deb will be teaching some of the most delicious, quirky fun willow items you can think of from Dragonflies to bullrushes & woven hearts.

All her projects are thoughtful and incorporate so many different techniques. These projects are a great way to understand how willow works.
